Let me just say that the waffles at Cast Iron Waffles are nothing like what comes out of my waffle iron. A trip to this quaint breakfast/coffee shop in Blakeney was my first introduction to Belgian Liege Waffles. WOW! I’m going to have a hard time enjoying my Bisquick Mix again.
These delicious waffles are made from a buttery sweet twice raised brioche style dough. The exterior develops a wonderful crunch from the sugar that caramelizes as the waffle cooks. They are dense, rich, and chewy with pearls of sugar embedded in the dough.
Cast Iron Waffles is located behind Lorenzo’s Pizza on Ardrey Kell in the bottom floor of a townhome building. On Tuesday nights the Meeting St Farmers Market is held in the grassy area adjacent to the restaurant. The interior is small, with only a few tables but the atmosphere is cozy, clean, and warm.
Chris and Krista Duggan opened Cast Iron Waffles in October of 2010. Their waffles can be ordered a number of different ways, but they are not meant to be eaten with syrup. It is however available upon request. We ordered the Lumberjack (with bacon on top) and the Liege Waffle Deluxe which comes with Nutella, 2 seasonal fresh fruits, and fresh whipped cream ($4.25). Their waffles don’t look big, but trust me- one is all you need. They are very filling.
I’m not sure which of the waffles was my favorite. The ‘Deluxe’ was like eating a scrumptious dessert concoction, while the lumberjack was the perfect blend of salty and sweet. If you enjoy them so much that you can’t possibly wait for a return visit to indulge again, they offer frozen waffles to go. I know I wouldn’t mind having a stash of them in my freezer.

In addition to waffles, Cast Iron Waffles also has a nice selection of fresh roasted fair trade organic coffee. As for the food… there’s not a whole lot of selection. You can have waffles……or waffles. But you’ll be quite happy with them. There’s something to be said for doing one thing and doing it well.
