The Roasting Company (not to be confused with the Roasting Oven in Fort Mill) is a hidden gem of a place on Montford Dr in Charlotte that’s been serving up good eats to Charlotteans for what seems like forever. The Roasting Company was a regular haunt of ours for years when we lived in Charlotte. In fact I can remember my mother bringing big trays of wings home when we were teenagers.
After an absence of many years, I recently returned to the Roasting Company and found the interior and menu looked exactly the same with one wonderful exception- they now serve sweet potato fries. We were in a hurry so we got our order to go and they gave us sweet potato fries Five Guys style- a whole brown bag filled with them. Pure Heaven!
The Roasting Company is great for those times when you want a hot, quick meal that is economical. This is an eat and run kind of place. You order at the counter and you might want to have an idea of what you are going to order before you get there. A line can form rapidly behind you and you wouldn’t want to feel
pressured into making a split second decision.
Your food will be ready amazingly fast. Practically by the time you get your drink and select a table, your name will be called to come back to the counter to get your food.
It can seem a little dingy inside and the tables and chairs have a rickety feel. At times the tables aren’t always cleaned promptly or thoroughly. For these reason we usually order food to go.
The food at Roasting Company is kind of a unique mix of Southern, Tex Mex, and maybe Jamaican. The focus is on chicken, primarily rotisserie chicken but they also serve soft tacos and a variety of wraps.
The chicken and rice con queso ($7.74) and the chicken and black bean con queso get rave reviews but I wouldn’t know because I order the same thing every single time I go to the Roasting Company-
The Southern BBQ Wrap. There’s nothing else like it anywhere.
It consists of slow cooked pork, herb rice, coleslaw, cheese, and their signature jaco sauce wrapped in a sun-dried tomato and garlic tortilla. It’s enormous with juicy, succulent pork, sweet coleslaw, and spicy sauce. Love it.
They have a long list of sides to choose from including collard greens, squash casserole, mashed sweet potatoes, buttered spinach, white bean augratin, and dill potato salad.
Montford Drive is a short little road packed with good places to eat right near the intersection of Park Rd and Woodlawn. A short walk down the street you can find the best wings in Charlotte at The Moosehead and the restaurant Good Food on Montford gets rave review.
