Croissants, cupcakes, sandwiches, fresh brewed coffee- You’ll find all that and more at Sunflower Baking Company in the Elizabeth Neighborhood of Charlotte. Located in a small strip mall on 7th St across from Showmars, Sunflower has been serving up freshly baked goods since October 2010.
Inside the space is bright, airy, and utilitarian. There is no cozy, welcoming coffee shop feel here. But that’s OK because with the minimalist decor, the focus is where it should be- on the delectable treats waiting to be devoured by hungry customers.
You’ll find muffins, magic bars, croissants, whoopie pies, cupcakes, cookies, pies, and homemade poptarts along with a selection of ice cream made in shop.
You can watch them bake through a window to the kitchen. No artificial ingredients, hydrogenated oils, or preservatives are used and on the wall is a large chalkboard indicating where ingredients are sourced from. They use organic flour from Lindley Mills in Graham, NC and eggs and butter from Cacklebury Farms in Concord, NC.
The magic bars are huge and full of chocolate and coconut. Likewise, the whoopie pies are enormous. Definitely a sharable treat unless you want to spend the entire afternoon napping. The croissants are made onsite from scratch and contain layer after layer of flaky goodness. Quite possibly the best in Charlotte. If those don’t tempt you, on any given day there are at least a dozen tantalizing cupcake flavors including Rolo, Key Lime, and Coco-Cola.
Sunflower Baking Company also serves Counter Culture Coffee, fairly traded, organic, and freshly roasted in Durham, NC. You’ll also find a nice selection of loose leaf teas as well as a few breakfast and lunch offerings plus craft beers and wine.
Lunch choices include Carmelized Onion and Gruyere Sandwich ($6.50), Tuna Melt ($7.25), Toasted PB & J with Raspberry Preserves ($4.75), and Toasted Banana and Nutella Sandwich ($5.95).
