Mert’s Heart and Soul in Uptown Charlotte is Soul Food Heaven. Collard Greens, fried okra, cornbread, mac and cheese, fried chicken, grilled pork chops. Are you hungry yet?
Your meal will get off to a great start with sweet and crumbly individual cornbread loaves fresh form the oven. Some of the best cornbread ever. For an appetizer, I love the soul rolls – the southern version of an eggroll with black eye peas, collard greens, and chicken breasts served with a spicy honey mustard.
Entree choices include catfish, fried chicken, and salmon cakes. The sides are the real highlights, especially the mac and cheese which is perfectly cheesy without being oily or gritty. The collard greens too are out of this world.
On our last visit to Mert’s, I wasn’t so sure about the service. They actually brought me the wrong sides with my meal. However, the sides I was brought looked so good, I decided to keep my mouth shut and eat up. And eat up I did. You might want to schedule a nap after a meal at Mert’s. You will be in a food coma afterwards, there’s no escaping it. Especially if you have the sweet potato cake, or banana pudding, or peach cobbler. You can pretty much write off the rest of your day.
