Old Town Market Opens with Large Crowd

Old Town Market Rock Hill

This past Thursday, a large crowd turned out for the Opening Celebration of Old Town Market in Rock Hill. The new venue for Old Town Market on Caldwell St, next to Millstone Pizza and Taphouse, is fabulous.  There’s an indoor area at the front of the building where at least a dozen arts and craft vendors were set up. Outside there were a mixture of produce, baked goods, pastured meat, and arts and crafts vendors. We were happy to see Puckerbutt Pepper Company there. Love their hot sauces and salsas!

I would have liked to have seen some more produce for sale. The market was a little heavy on arts and crafts vendors which included jewelry, woodturned bowls, pottery, and handsewn items.

Christine White Pottery Rock HillI did purchase this lovely piece of pottery from Christine White which has become my dog’s food bowl. Yes, she’s spoiled as every rescue dog should be.

Old Town Market Rock HillOne of the best things about Old Town Market is the activities for kids they offer. At this particular market, kids had the opportunity to decorate beeswax candles, plant flowers, and play with sidewalk chalk, hula hoops, and cornhole. The children all seemed to be enjoying themselves.

After purchasing a few things, we decided to have pizza and a few beers at Millstone Pizza and Taphouse. They had the garage doors open and we snagged a table with a great view of the market.

Millstone Pizza and TaphouseMillstone has 40 beers on tap and they have a custom wood-fired oven that produces delicious pizzas with a crispy crust.

Millstone Pizza and Taphouse Parking for Old Town Market is off of E White St. The Market is open Thursdays from 5 to 8pm and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. This coming Thursday, May 16, there will be live music performed by Amanda DeCarlo and the 4-H Petting Zoo will keep the kids entertained.

Spring CSAs

It’s time to sign up for Spring CSAs. If you’re not sure what a CSA is, it stands for Community Supported Agriculture and it’s basically produce that you buy directly from a farm and pay for in advance. Once a week for a set number of weeks, you get a basket full of fresh, just-picked fruits and vegetables. It’s a wonderful way for local farmers to raise funds before all of their crops are ready to be harvested.

Below is information on two local CSA programs. If you know of another CSA that should be included, please leave a comment below.

The Bush-N-Vine CSA runs from March 24-May 10. Deadline for signing up is February 1.  Download a printable form here. Produce will include strawberries, broccoli, green leaf lettuce, purple leaf lettuce, spinach, radishes, Romaine, sweet potatoes, kale, and cabbage. Selection varies week to week.

The Bush-N-Vine has multiple pick-up locations: Bush N Vine Stand in Lake Wylie, Bush N Vine Stand in Rock Hill, Winthrop University (faculty and students only), Bush N Vine Stand in York, and Jesse Brown’s South Park. Cost of a small share is $150 (2-3 people), a medium share is $220 (3-4 people), and a large share is $290 (5-6 people).

Poplar Ridge Farm is a small organic farm in nearby Waxhaw, NC. Deadline for the Spring/Summer CSA is March 2013. The CSA lasts 24 weeks, from May to October. A Full Share Membership fee costs $924 and a half-share is $462. In order to purchase a half-share,  you must be partnered with another family.

In addition to produce from Poplar Ridge Farm, through partnerships with other farms, they also offer eggs, poultry, breads/baked goods, artisanal cheese, and organic, custom roasted coffee. CSA shares can be picked up at the farm or delivered. Charlotte delivery areas include South Park, Elizabeth/Plaza Midwood, Eastover, Dilworth, Ballantyne, and Fort Mill. Find more information here.
