Pet of the Month: Ace

Ace is a very handsome and friendly medium-sized dog currently available for adoption at the Humane Society of York County. He was surrendered to the Humane Society by his family because they no longer had time for him and I know he would very much like to be a part of a family again. Ace is a good-natured and happy dog and he likes to take walks. If you are interested in adopting a dog, you can visit with Ace and the other adoptable dogs at The Humane Society of York County between 1-4pm Tuesday through Sunday.

Even if you are not currently looking to adopt a dog, consider being a volunteer at the Humane Society. The Humane Society relies very heavily on volunteers and you can commit as little or as much time as you desire. Dog walkers are needed daily between 8:30 and 11am. Once you have gone through Volunteer Orientation (only takes about 1 hour) you are free to drop in any time during volunteer hours, grab a leash and a dog and head out for a walk in the surrounding neighborhood. Even if you only have 20 minutes to stop in and walk one dog, it is time very well spent.

Look at the size of that tongue!

Pet of The Month:Snoopy

Yesterday my husband, son, and I had the pleasure of walking Snoopy a resident of the Humane Society of York County. Snoopy is a young male dog, not quite one who has a very agreeable personality and gorgeous markings on his fur. We took him for a long walk and I think we wore each other out! Snoopy is a very alert dog, interested in what is going on around him and would very much like to have a forever home. Halfway through our walk we saw a gorgeous swan which let us get within a few feet of it.

We also got to spend some time with Pug, an older male dog who is friendly, agreeable, and quite the acrobat.

The Humane Society of York County is a local, nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter located on Regent Parkway just across from the old PTL property. Volunteering as a dog walker is something I did fairly regularly last summer  and is something I’ve been meaning to add back into my weekly schedule. My son had expressed an interest in volunteering at the HSYC  so together we attended the April volunteer orientation.

The HSYC offers a volunteer orientation the first Saturday of every month and attendance at the orientation is required before you can volunteer. They welcome kids volunteering, but they are limited in their volunteer duties. Children under 16 cannot hold the leash on dog walks, but they encourage children coming with their parents to volunteer. It is so important for the shelter animals to be comfortable being around children since it is very likely they will eventually be adopted by a family with kids.

Volunteer hours for dog walking are 7 days a week from 8:30 to about 11:30am. This is a wonderful way to volunteer and get your exercise at the same time. Training for a running race? There are a number of dogs at the Humane Society that can help you out. Leash one of them up and take them out for a run. They WILL make you run faster and farther than you thought you were capable. Trust me.

Check the Humane Society of York County website for volunteer information, adoptable pets, plus upcoming fundraising events. Saturday April 28 there will be a fundraiser at the Pineville Ice House. From 10-2 you will be able to meet pets from the Humane Society and public ice-skating will take place from 1:15 to 4pm. For every $10 ticket purchased, the Pineville Ice House will donate $3.50 to HSYC.

The Pineville Ice House is located at 400 Towne Centre Blvd in Pineville, NC.

Humane Society of York County and Fluffy’s Buttermilk Pancakes

The Humane Society of York County is a local no-kill animal shelter currently located at 2036 Carolina Place Dr behind Lowes. They are in the process of moving to a new location in Regent Park where they will have more space. Adoption hours are daily from 1pm-4pm. They are closed on Mondays.

The Humane Society relies very heavily on volunteers and they have a new volunteer orientation the first Saturday of every month at 10am. Volunteer hours are daily between 9am and 1pm. One of the things volunteers are needed to do is walk the dogs. The dogs spend virtually all day and night in crates and really need the exercise. Plus the poor things crave attention.

Jasper

Last week, I took Jasper for a walk. He’s just a big baby – very sweet. He actually preferred to lay in the grass. It felt so good to him. This is a volunteer activity that really doesn’t take much time and you can just drop in whenever you have a spare hour or so. It’s also really great exercise. For those who love to multi-task, you can get your exercise and volunteering done at the same time.

The HSYC has a nice selection of dogs and cats available for adoption. These are sweet, sweet animals and they would be so appreciative to have a nice, loving home. To date, 210 dogs and 100 cats have been adopted.

I myself have two cats adopted from the York Animal Shelter – Fluffy and Simba.

Below is a recipe for Buttermilk Pancakes. These pancakes really are delicious and they are Fluffy’s favorite. Whenever I make them, he likes to lick the plates clean of maple syrup.

Buttermilk Pancakes

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 4 Tablespoons butter, melt
  • 1 1/3 cups buttermilk
  • vegetable oil

How to Do it

  1. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl.
  2. Combine egg, butter, and buttermilk in medium bowl and whisk to combine well.
  3. Add buttermilk mixture to dry ingredients and stir until combined, but not more than necessary.
  4. Heat large nonstick griddle pan or large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Place about 1/2 teaspoon of oil on pan for each pancake and using a measuring cup scoop batter and pour on top of oil using about 1/4 to 1/3 cup batter for each pancake.
  6. Flip when bubbles start to rise to top and continue to cook until batter cooks all the way through. These are hearty pancakes and the batter will still be gooey in the middle if not cooked long enough.
  7. If desired, place pat of butter on top (tastes so good!).

Serves 3-4 people

The Humane Society will be having their big fundraiser, The Dog Gone Good Times Festival at Anne Springs Close Greenway this Saturday (Sept 10). Be sure to come out and support them. There will be a 5K followed by a dog walk around Lake Haigler. For more info about the festival and the Humane Society click here.
