Elizabeth 8K 2012 in Charlotte, NC

Ted and I ran with some friends yesterday in the 26th Annual Elizabeth 8K Road Race. This is the oldest 8k in Charlotte and the course was beautiful. The course started at Independence Park and wound its way back and forth through the verdant historic streets of the Elizabeth Neighborhood. Elizabeth is one of Charlotte’s oldest neighborhoods with many of the houses dating back to the early 1900s. Independence Park was the first public park in Charlotte. I got a little misty eyed as we walked through the part of the park by the playground. My son attended Mother’s Morning Out at St Martin’s Episcopal Church which backs up to the park and we used to go play on the playground when I picked him up.

Once we got to the race check-in my mind was completely distracted from long ago memories and pre-race jitters thanks to Elvis. At the start line the nerves started back up. I couldn’t help but notice the crowd looked especially young and fit. For a few brief moments I worried I may come in last out of the 500+ runners. Eventually I picked out several runners in the crowd that I was fairly confident I could beat, one of whom was dressed in jeans.  Unfortunately, we neglected to train for this race- my first 8k and my husband’s second. We ran not one time in the 4 weeks preceding the race. (And we are paying for it today.)

The race thinned out pretty well within 3 blocks. Thankfully the weather was on the cool side and a wonderful tree canopy hangs over most of the residential streets in Elizabeth. The course made frequent turns which I liked. Helps keep me interested. In the first mile we passed by Jennifer Roberts, Democratic Candidate for the House, cheering on runners in front of her house. I made it over a mile without walking, but for the remaining 4 miles I had to take short walk breaks. The course was a little hilly, but thankfully there seemed to be more downhill than uphill. There were many people camped out at the ends of driveways to cheer the runners on.

Somehow I made it to the end, crossing the line with my friends Martha and Paulette in just under an hour. Ted and Holly finished ahead of us and were there to cheer us on at the finish line. Paulette’s husband and kids were at the finish line with “We love you Mom” signs. So sweet.

There was quite a party going on in Independence Park after the race with post-race refreshments (yummy bread from Great Harvest) and beer plus live music in front of Hawthorne Pizza on 7th St. We will definitely plan on running this race again next year.

We capped off yesterday night with the grand opening of City Tavern SouthPark. An old neighbor of ours is the manager of the City Tavern Restaurants and we had a nice time catching up with him and his wife at the opening. The restaurant is located on the back side of SouthPark Mall in the former San Antonios space. The space inside is large and hip. City Tavern has put in a large outdoor patio area with dozens of tables and two couch areas with fire pits. We started the evening in the dining area with wine and hors d’Oeuvres, checked out the patio for a little while and finished the evening at the bar with orange creamsicle shots! We were enjoying ourselves so much, it was past midnight by the time we left.

I have no doubt City Tavern will experience great success in this location. They will do well at attracting a young professional crowd and should do a fantastic bar business.

Cupid’s Cup 5k and Breakfast at Toast

We were out of bed bright and early this cold, chilly morning to head up to Charlotte for the Cupid’s Cup 5k. I was really dreading it because I started back working out with a vengeance this past week and every muscle in my body is rebelling. I knew I was in bad shape when I could hardly walk the day after doing a ‘Lite Aerobics’ class (I didn’t think it was so lite). Two days later I decided it was better to push through the pain and attempt to get my muscles loosened back up again (at least to the point of being able to walk across a room without getting strange glances). After doing a glutes and guts class, I decided the ‘Lite’ aerobics class was Lite afterall.

So it was with much trepidation (and pain) that I made my way to the starting line this morning. There was a huge crowd (over 900) of energetic people who turned out for the race which benefits CMC’s Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Fund. The energy from all the runners along with ‘Fire burnin on the Dance Floor’ blasting from the speakers helped get me in a more positive mood.

The race began on East Blvd just across from Freedom Park. We were a ways back from the start line in a huge sea of people and while the race was chip timed, there was no starting mat. Fortunately Ted had his Garmin watch on and new to subtract about 30 seconds from our finish times. The start of the race was very congested and the first portion was uphill. We were stuck going at a pretty slow pace for a while. It wasn’t until we made the right turn on Dilworth Rd that the congestion eased up. I was so concerned with not trampling anyone that I forgot to get a glimpse of our old house on Ewing Ave. as we ran by.

From Dilworth Rd the race went along the backside of Latta Park past Dilworth Elementary to Euclid Ave. There were some pretty tough uphill portions and I did walk a few times to catch my breath. At this point there were still quite a few runners around me and the neat thing about that is you get to pick up bits and pieces of conversation that help take your mind off your struggle. I’ve always been jealous of people who can carry on a conversation while running. My breathing gets way too elevated for anything of the sort. I got to listen to two women discover that they both have daughters named Rose. Then some kid had a complete emotional and physical breakdown midway down Euclid. Seems to be one every race.

From Euclid we turned back down East Blvd and it was all downhill from there. At this point I really wanted to walk, but mentally I just couldn’t let myself walk a downhill portion. I’ve never had so much trouble running downhill, so I know my legs were really in rough shape. The finish line was all the way at the end of East Blvd in the parking lot of CMC-Myers Park. I ended up finishing with a fairly good time. Much better than I thought I would.

Lots of heaters were set up in the parking deck area.

Nice spread of food.

We passed on the after race snacks and headed to Toast of Dilworth for breakfast. Every race we do, we get a celebratory breakfast afterwards. It’s usually the only time we go out to eat breakfast, so I really look forward to it. In fact, I think I run the races just so I can get breakfast.

Toast of Dilworth is located in one of the old strip malls on Park Rd just a little way past where Ideal Way crosses Park Rd. If I remember correctly, this space used to be an upscale Italian Restaurant but I can’t remember the name. I do have a faint recollection of my brother having his rehearsal dinner there.

We decided to order the Southwest Scramble and Tony’s French Toast off of the Special’s Menu.

Southwest Scramble – the flavor of the pickled jalapenos dominated and it could have used some sour cream or avocado to balance the flavor, but I enjoyed it. Hash browns were average.

French Toast had too much cream cheese filling (I didn’t think there was such a thing as too much cream cheese filling, but there is).

Bacon was divine. Wish I had ordered a plate of just bacon.

There are some negative reviews of customer service online, but we had excellent service and didn’t have to wait long for our food even though they were busy. And we were offered coffee in to go cups when we were leaving. Gotta like that.

Two New Running Programs at Leroy Springs

If you need a little help staying on track with your New Year’s Resolutions, Leroy Springs Recreation Complex has two running programs starting in the next few months.

A training program for the Elizabeth 8K will begin February 20th and run for 8 weeks. This will be a 2 day a week program and will help prepare you for the 26th Annual Elizabeth 8K in Charlotte. The Elizabeth 8K is a USATF certified course through the historic Elizabeth neighborhood and draws a large crowd every year. Baby strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. Participants will receive a technical T-shirt (while supplies last) and post-race refreshments. There will also be live music and overall and age-group awards. Proceeds benefit beautification of the historic Elizabeth Neighborhood as well as Presbyterian Hemby Children’s Hospital. Online registraion is at racesonline.com.

Couch to 5K Group at Springmaid Road Race November 2011

Leroy Springs will also be offering a Couch to 5K Trail Edition Training Program to prepare for the Luke Hoover Memorial Race on May 20th at the Anne Springs Close Greenway. Classes will begin March 22nd and will be on Monday and Thursday evenings. Last year, my husband and I participated in Leroy Spring’s first Couch to 5k. It’s a great way for beginning runners to get prepared to run a 5K in just a couple of months. Being part of a running group is a wonderful way to form new friendships and meet people who will encourage and motivate you to meet your goals. The instructors are super friendly and will turn an activity that isn’t always fun for everyone into something that you may even look forward to.

For more info about either program, contact the Leroy Springs Recreation Complex at 803-547-4575.

Local Run – McMullen Creek Greenway

McMullen Creek Greenway, located off of Pineville-Matthews Road is a wonderful place to go for a weekend run or walk. The Greenway is approximately 5.8 miles long and crosses under Interstate 485 and ends near Rea Rd. The trail has sections of dirt, asphalt, and boardwalk all of which are much gentler to run on than concrete.

The trail overall is very shady and flat. One side of the trail backs up to houses while the other side is marshy and woody. Except for the noise around the Interstate, the McMullen Greenway makes for a nice, quiet run and if you keep your eyes peeled you will no doubt spot some interesting wildlife. Our last time there, we stopped for a minute to watch a group of 6 deer cross the Greenway.

Under the Interstate

On a weekend morning there are a good number of people there, mostly runners and walkers and also a few bikers. There are mile markers every half a mile as well as a marker for the halfway point of a 5K.

There is a Port-a Potty in the parking lot. But I wouldn’t recommend using it unless you have to as it doesn’t seem to be very well maintained. I had too much coffee one morning and had to use it. It’s a mistake I won’t be making again.

Look for the parking lot right off of Highway 51 across from the Waffle House and Chilis.

Krispy Kreme Challenge

Building on the prior post about area road races, we would be remiss to not include the Krispy Kreme Challenge. What is the Krispy Kreme Challenge? It is a 5 mile race which starts on NC State’s campus, run 2.5 miles to the Krispy Kreme store and then run 2.5 miles back to the bell tower on campus. Not an extreme distance but there is a catch to this race, you have to eat a dozen donuts at the 2.5 mile mark and then run back all within an hour.

Now in its eighth year,  the Krispy Kreme Challenge is a student-organized charity race benefiting the NC Children’s hospital. What started off as a bet between some friends at NC State is now a race that is capped at 7700 runners and in 2010 raised $122,000 dollars for NC Children’s Hospital.

Concerned with how to train for such an event? You can also sign up as a casual runner, who are not required to eat all of the doughnuts, or Supporters, who do not run in the race but do receive a race T-shirt.

The organizers of the 2012 Krispy Kreme Challenge expect to reach a capacity of 7,700 runners for this year’s race. Go online to http://www.krispykremechallenge.com/ to register.

Race Time: Saturday February 4th 2012

Calories Consumed: 2400

Fort Mill Area Running Races Early 2012

It’s New Years Resolution time and what better way to incentivize yourself to stay the course than registering for a few races. If you’ve never run in a race before, there’s no need to be intimidated. They are for all ability levels and runners are a really positive, supportive group. It’s always more fun if you race with friends and a local running group is a great way to form running friendships. My husband and I participate in a small running group in Fort Mill and we are always looking for new friendly faces to run with. We meet at a local spot each week and all run at our own pace. Some of us walk some (that would be me). If your interested, leave a comment and I’ll give you more information.

Pictures From Christmasville Reindeer Romp 2011

Over 1,200 people participated in the Reindeer Romp this morning in Rock Hill, SC. The 5K benefited the tri-county Girls on the Run Program and kick started the Saturday Christmasville Events. The course was mostly flat and well suited to runners and walkers of all abilities with many spectators along the route to cheer people on. What a wonderful program Girls on the Run has developed into and it was delightful to see so many young girls giving it their all in the race. The race was set up very well with “waitresses” walking around before the race with offerings of free hot chocolate. Artificial snow showered down on the runners at the start/finish line on Main St. All runners were given both a t-shirt and a pair of reindeer antlers.

On the way to the car, we drooled over Mark Hendel’s Fried Crazy Desserts. He had just about every fried dessert imaginable including fried cheesecake, Moon Pies, twinkies, oreos, and snickers. He does catering and parties and can be contacted at 803-412-8243.

Christmasville resumes tomorrow (Sunday December 4) at 12pm with ice skating and marshmallow roasting at Old Town Amphitheater, Ferris Wheel rides on Main St, Gingerbread House Contest in the Center for the Arts, and The Holiday Market Place in the Palmetto Room Tent Annex. Don’t forget to stop by the Food Court set up in the Black St Parking Lot for some fried candy goodness.

Gobble Wobble 8K and Periwinkle Bakery and Cafe

Despite the cold temperature this morning, nearly 100 people came out to run in the First Annual Gobble Wobble 8K in Rock Hill, SC. The race started on Main St, weaved its way through Winthrop University’s Campus and the adjoining residential neighborhood, and finished back on Main St. Overall, it was a nice flat course to run. The fastest time was run by Chadwick Rollins , a 15-year-old from Rock Hill, SC in 29:49. That’s a 6 minute pace! The Gobble Wobble was organized by the Junior Welfare League as a fundraiser for Girls On the Run of the Tri-County.

After the race, we stopped by Periwinkle Cafe and Bakery for some coffee and a bite to eat. I usually think places look pretty drab this time a year, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Old Town section of Rock Hill look better. Patti Petersen, the former owner of Pat-a-Cakes Bakery, opened Periwinkle Cake earlier this year and is excited to be a part of the Old Town Revitalization.

The specialty coffee of the day, German Chocolate Cake, was wonderful. Their coffee is organic and locally roasted. The inside of Periwinkle is warm and welcoming with plenty of tables and chairs. You enter into a loft-like area with tables and a huge mural on the wall. There is a staircase leading down to the bakery area.

Periwinkle Cafe and Bakery has a wide assortment of baked goods including muffins, cookies, brownies, and cheesecake. In addition, they do custom decorated cakes. Lunch offerings include sandwiches, salads, and soups. Among the recent lunch specials are Chicken Caprese Sandwich and Marinated Portobello with ham on Kaiser roll with Blue Cheese Dressing.
