An extra-long outdoor wood table is something I’ve desired for a long time. When I discovered a (somewhat) local wood craftsman who makes beautiful custom outdoor furniture for very reasonable prices, I couldn’t resist. Chip of Chipswood.com built this beautiful 10-foot long picnic-style table for us and I couldn’t be more pleased. It’s even more beautiful than I had hoped and cost a fraction of the price of similar tables in those fancy mail-order catalogs.
Normally Chip builds 6 or 8 foot long tables. But I wanted a table that could easily fit 12 people. Chip was very accommodating and came up with a design that is sturdy and will sit evenly in the grass. Instead of doing extra long benches on the sides, he made two shorter benches for each side and I LOVE the end benches he made.
Chip lets you pick your stain color and I wanted our table to be very dark since the wood on our back porch has a dark stain. On top of the stain, Chip applies multiple layers of polyurethane which gives the table a more finished look. The wood used for the top of the table is spruce and the table in addition to being long, also has some extra width to it. There is plenty of room down the middle to do one of those chintzy Sandra Lee tablescapes should I ever feel the need to do so.
Chip’s workshop is in Lyman, SC not too far from Spartanburg, but he will deliver within 100 miles. In addition to outdoor tables, Chip also makes a beautiful selection of porch swings, benches, chairs, and playsets. Take a look at his website for a full selection.
