Gone are the days when your burger choices were McDonald’s, BK, or Wendy’s. It seems every few months there’s a new burger chain opening and they’re going much more upscale.
One of the latest to open in the Charlotte area is Smashburger with a location in Stonecrest (South Charlotte). Smashburger uses fresh, never frozen 100% Certified Angus Beef which they shape into meatballs. The meatballs are then ‘smashed’ into a patty using a special tool, hence the name Smashburger. The patties are cooked on a buttered grill, resulting in what they claim is a burger with more juice than any other cooking method produces.
The inside of Smashburger is bright and clean and decorated with a red and black color scheme. You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table served on really cool metal trays. The service is very friendly and helpful and extremely fast for a made to order burger place. There is ample seating inside, a few tables on their patio, and more tables in front of the restaurant by the fountain.

We found the burgers to be good, but not memorable. The fries on the other hand are top-notch. You can choose between russet potato or sweet potato and have them served regular or as smashfries. I wasn’t sure what smashfries were at first. I had a slightly disturbing image in my mind of a mound of smashed and mushed together fries. But it turns out they are normal fries tossed in rosemary, garlic, and olive oil and they are delicious.

In addition to ordering one of the special burgers, you can also build-your-own from a long list of toppings, cheeses, and bun styles. Add on toppings include fried egg, avocado, fried pickles, and garlic mushrooms. Other menu options at Smashburger include grilled chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, and Haagen Dazs Milkshakes. They also offer vegetarian and gluten-free choices as well as beer and wine.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Smashburger is donating $1 from every sale of a regular, classic smashburger until November 5 to the Charlotte Chapter of the Susan G Komen Foundation.
