Growlers Pourhouse

Growlers Pourhouse

Growlers Pour House, located in the always a good time NoDa Neighborhood of Charlotte, does 2 things and does them well. Craft Beer and what they term ‘Beer Food’. Located next to the Crepe Cellar (same owners) on North Davidson, Growlers Pour House has a unique selection of American Craft Beers, with 14 on tap. For 2 years in a row, they have been chosen as one of America’s Top 100 Beer Bars by Draft Magazine.

Growlers Pourhouse NoDa

Exposed brick and dark wood set the scene. A mix of bar stools, booths, and a large community table in the center provide seating for patrons. It’s not a huge space and it’s best to go early if you want to avoid crowds. If you can’t decide what you want to order right away, go ahead and ask for some complimentary popcorn. There’s nothing special about it, but I can’t ever pass on free food.

Growler's Pourhouse NoDaWe enjoyed 2 Bell’s Midwestern Pale Ales, raw oysters on the half shell (does anything go better with beer?), and some chicken wings which were definitely above average in my book.

Beers on tap rotate regularly and their beer menu on the website names only styles of beer: seasonals, pilsners, hefe, amber/red, brown, belgian, IPA, double IPA, American Strong, Porter, and High Gravity.

Growler's Pourhouse NoDa

Also notable at Growlers Pour House is a refurbished 1936 Gaskell and Chambers beer engine from which you can try cask ales, hand-pumped and served at cellar temperatures. These brews are unpasteurized, unfiltered, and naturally carbonated by a second fermentation.

Growlers Pourhouse NoDaAfter enjoying our wings, we devoured 2 reubens. I was really looking forward to this reuben because it was named Best Sandwich in Charlotte by The Charlotte Observer in 2012. The menu description sounds very tantalizing- corned beef, sriracha russian dressing, swiss, purple slaw, Juniper berry sauerkraut on marble rye. It was quite good, although I don’t think I detected  the taste of the sriracha or the juniper berries and I don’t think I would consider it the Best Sandwich in Charlotte. But I might have to go back to have another one just to make sure :) . I do love a reuben.

Growlers Pourhouse NoDa

I might however nominate the fries for Best in Charlotte. We devoured them.

Growlers Pour House also makes an array of homemade sausages and they grind all the meat in-house with choice cuts. They also offer a Cheese and Beer Pairing with 4 cheeses paired with complimentary 4-ounce beers.

Places to Eat: Cowfish

The Cowfish CharlotteWhen it comes to restaurants in Charlotte with innovative fun food, The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar takes the cake. This extraordinarily popular Southpark restaurant where a 90 minutes wait for a table is nothing, serves up burgers, sushi, burgers in sushi form, and sushi in burger form. It’s one crazy place. You may think it sounds a little gimmicky, but the food really works and it’s truly a food lovers paradise. Recently my son was given the choice of any restaurant in Charlotte for his birthday dinner. And you guessed it, he chose The Cowfish. My boy knows his food!

The menu reads like an encyclopedia, page after page of delicious temptations. There’s much more to choose from than burgers and sushi – wonderful appetizers, tantalizing salads, hand spun milkshakes, and sandwiches. You might want to study the menu at home to lessen your ordering anxiety. Even better, designate different people in your party to order off of different parts of the menu so you can sample a wide variety of things. Yeah, I like to be bossy like that. :)

Cowfish Charlotte

Just in the burger category, there are approximately 16 specialty burgers to choose from, each one sounding better than the last.

But I’m getting ahead of myself because at The Cowfish you will not want to skip the appetizers. There are some excellent choices and the portion sizes are very sharable.

The Crab Rangoon Dip ($10) is always a favorite with wonton crisps and sweet chili sauce. The dramatic display of Coconut Battered Onion Rings with horseradish aioli and sweet chili sauce, gorgeously piled high on a plate will cause more than a few eyes to open wide in eager anticipation.

Cowfish Crab Rangoon

Other good choices are the Blackened Ahi Tuna Nachos, Crinkle Cut Fried Pickles, and Sweet and Spicy Thai Cucumbers (also available as a side).

The decisions don’t get any easier when it comes to sides. Choices include sweet potato fries, house seasoned fries, bacon coleslaw, sweet and spicy Thai cucumbers, grilled vegetables, crispy onion straws, edamame, and fried pickles.

Cowfish BurgushiThe Deliverance Roll

No trip to The Cowfish should be considered complete without trying their signature Burgushi.  The Deliverance Roll ($14) consists of tender pulled pork, tangy BBQ sauce, and tempura onion strings rolled with seaweed and rice, tempura battered and flash fried, then topped with bacon coleslaw.

If that doesn’t suit your fancy, try The Taste Explosion Roll ($14) with ground beef, applewood bacon, fresh jalapenos and spicy cream sauce inside  a sushi roll coated with tempura flakes. Topped with marinated roma tomato and pepper jack cheese blend and drizzled with cashew cilantro pesto. If that doesn’t wake your taste buds up, nothing will.

Cowfish Spicy TunaBlackened Tuna Roll

If traditional sushi is your thing, there are more than 60 rolls to choose from or you can build your own.

Ok, so you’re beginning to see why selecting 1 or 2 things from the The Cowfish menu will be one of the hardest decisions of your week.

Cowfish SushiSushi is best eaten in large quatities.

Luckily The Cowfish offers a Bento Box, which is an excellent way a sample a variety of things when you don’t feel like pigging out and ordering enough food for 4 people.

Because, be warned- Portions are LARGE, as you can see from the pictures.

Cowfish Reuben BurgerReuben Kulakofsky Burger

From the burger menu, you can’t go wrong with Porky’s Revenge ($12), a beef burger topped with pulled pork, smoked gouda cheese, crispy onion strings, bacon coleslaw, and tangy BBQ sauce.

Also a crowd pleaser is the Stringin the Blues Burger ($12), a beef burger dusted with blackening seasoning, topped with blue cheese crumbles, crispy onion strings, and homemade gorgonzola sauce.

Pastrami lovers may not be able to resist the Reuben Kulakofsky Burger which consists of a beef burger topped with pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and a sweet chili 1000 island dressing.

Burgers are made from a half-pound of Meyer Natural Angus Beef (100% vegetarian fed and hormone and antibiotic free). Yes, that’s a lot of meat.

Cowfish BurgerPorky’s Revenge

The Cowfish tends to attract a young, professional crowd, but it is also a great place for a family outing due to their fabulous kids menu. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches rolled and cut to look like sushi? Awesome!

They’ve recently changed their reservation policies and no longer take reservations after 6pm. To make a reservation between 11am and 6pm, you must call at least a day in advance.

Cowfish SaladGrilled Salmon Salad with Sesame encrusted Goat Cheese and Cashews

A creative menu, fresh foods artistically presented, large portions, and a fun environment. What’s not to like about the Cowfish? (Except the wait for a table.)

PLaces To Eat: Cajun Queen

Cajun QueenThe Cajun Queen is a Charlotte Institution and has been my favorite restaurant in Charlotte for well over 20 years. It’s located in a converted house on 7th Street in the historic Elizabeth Neighborhood. Other New Orleans-style restaurants have come and gone over the years, but the Cajun Queen has stood the test of time. People go to the Cajun Queen not only to feast on some delicious food, but to have a good time with family and friends. The restaurant does a great job of conveying the upbeat, happy nature of The Big Easy and you can’t help but have your spirits lifted while dining here.

Cajun Queen Charlotte

There used to be a beautiful old tree out front, but it had to come down years ago, and in its place is an enormous alligator carved out of what I presume is the remains of the tree. Parking in the small, oddly shaped parking area behind the restaurant can be a bear. Other options are to park on the street out back or at one of the neighboring businesses if they are closed for the day.

Cajun Queen Charlotte

Inside, there’s a dining area to the right and the left and stairs leading up to the second level where you’ll find a bar and another dining area. They now have a second story rooftop outdoor dining area as well. The 7th ST Gator Band plays 7 nights a week in the upstairs dining room. The music is loud and it is tough to converse while they are playing, but they do take frequent breaks.

If you want a less noisy dinner, reserve a table downstairs or outside during the warmer months. The Cajun Queen can get quite busy and you’ll definitely want a reservation if dining here during the weekend. There was even a crowd during our recent visit on a Sunday evening.

The food at the Cajun Queen is consistently good and the portions are generous. For appetizers, we always get the BBQ Shrimp and the Fried Oysters. Dip the complimentary French Bread Rolls in the BBQ Shrimp sauce. It’s phenomenal. The fried oysters are the lightest I’ve ever eaten. Crispy and not at all greasy.

The gumbo is quite good as are the red beans and rice. No complaints about the etouffee or the Shrimp Creole either.

But the real winners are the daily specials, usually a selection of 2 fresh fish (such as salmon and mahi mahi) and either a pork or beef selection. You pick your fish/ meat and then choose one of 2 or 3 seafood toppings to go with it. On our recent visit I had a crawfish, shitake, and roasted red pepper cream sauce on top of salmon and a bed of mashed potatoes. It was divine. Totally worth an extra hour (maybe 6 hours) in the gym.

Next time you want a little taste of New Orleans right here in the Queen City, head to Cajun Queen and have your fill of crawfish, gumbo, and spice- plus a little jazz too.

Nolen Kitchen

Nolen Kitchen Myers Park

Myers Park is one of the oldest and most beautiful neighborhoods in Charlotte, characterized by beautiful tree-lined streets and stately homes. A meal at Nolen Kitchen on Selwyn Ave is a wonderful way to experience this ever-popular Charlotte Neighborhood.

Nolen Kitchen is own by the same owners of Illios Noche, Big View Diner, and the recently opened Maverick on Montford Dr. The small, oddly shaped parking lot outside of Nolen Kitchen that is shared with Reid’s is a little difficult to manuever. If you can find a place to park your car, you’ll be greeted by a restaurant interior that is modern, bright, and inviting. If the weather is nice, don’t miss a chance to eat on the awesome patio, complete with comfy couches and tables shaded with umbrellas.

Nolen Kitchen Myers Park

Upon entering the restaurant, you’ll be greeted by a small seating area and a fireplace, next to which is a spacious, curved bar.  The dining area just beyond is long and narrow, the walls lined with sconces. The light from the windows and sconces bounce off of a fabulous curved wood-paneled ceiling. The space is bright and warm.

On the lunch menu, you’ll find an eclectic mix of foods. The extremely thin Zucchini Chips served with cucumber yogurt are a popular appetizer choice. The Pork Belly Tacos are so-so and the Nolen ”Buffalo Wings” are quite tasty with a thick, spicy glaze and melted blue cheese crumbles.

Salads and a variety of burgers and sandwiches form the bulk of the menu. Choose from the Steak Burger, Kobe Sliders, and the Grilled Cheese with oven-roasted tomatoes, apple smoked bacon, and tomato fondue. The Chicken Souvlaki Wrap is full of perfectly flavored, moist chicken covered in a fresh yogurt, lemon sauce.

On the Dinner menu, you’ll find most of the lunch selections, plus a variety of Surf and Turf selections.  Nolen Kitchen also serves a Sunday Brunch.

Charlotte Restaurant Week Winter 2013

Get ready to try a new restaurant or two! Charlotte’s Restaurant Week runs from January 18-27. This biannual event is designed to drive traffic to restaurants during otherwise slow times of the year and it is a wonderful opportunity to try new places.

Participating restaurants offer a special, limited menu which includes 3 courses (more at some restaurants) for $30 per person (not including tax and gratuity).

With over 100 restaurants in and around Charlotte participating, it can be hard to select just one or 2 to try. We thought we’d put together a list of some of the places we like (in no particular order).

  1. Cajun Queen- This has been my (sentimental) favorite restaurant in Charlotte for at least 2 decades. Live jazz music 7 nights a week. Restaurant week menu includes a glass of wine and 3 courses. Their fresh blackened fish dishes with rich seafood toppings are amazing. As are the BBQ shrimp and fried oyster appetizers which unfortunately aren’t included on the restaurant week menu. See the menu.
  2. Pewter Rose- Always good, interesting food in a really cool location. My husband and I had our rehearsal dinner here many, many years ago. Menu includes a glass of wine and 3 courses. See the menu.
  3. Liberty Gastropub- Just down the street from Pewter Rose, this new restaurant really serves up some great food. A number of their restaurant week menu offerings sound very intriguing including Pad Thai Pig Ears, Fried Mars Bar, and Apple Bacon Pie with Gingersnap Crust and Butterscotch Ice Cream. Read Fort Mill SC Living’s Review or see the menu.
  4. Brio Tuscan Grille- The atmosphere of this Southpark restaurant is simply amazing and the food’s not too shabby either. See the menu.
  5. Upstream- You’ll find fantastic seafood at this Phillips Place restaurant. Plus they are serving a Tega Hills Farm salad on their menu.
  6. Zink! American Kitchen- Offering a huge Restaurant Week menu including a glass of sparkling wine and 4 courses ( a few of the selections cost extra). Read Fort Mill SC Living’s review or see the menu.
  7. Pacos Tacos and Tequila- Only make this choice if you’re really hungry! You get a Margarita and 4 courses. Read Fort Mill SC Living’s review or see the menu.
  8. 5 Church- This newly opened restaurant is definitely one of the most happening places in Charlotte. The Crisp Szechuan Pork Belly with spicy cabbage has my name all over it. See the menu.
  9. 131 Main Blakeney- Located in nearby Blakeney, 131 Main is a romantic spot for date night. Choose from steak, fish, pasta, or meatloaf on their menu. Read Fort Mill SC Living’s review.
  10. Passion 8 Bistro- Located right here in Fort Mill and named one of the 25 Best Restaurants by Charlotte Magazine. Unfortunately not a whole lot of selection on the restaurant week menu, but it is sure to be delicious food.

Note: We try at least 1 new restaurant each time restaurant week comes around and we’ve had some hits and misses. I sometimes feel that certain restaurants slack off during restaurant week and do not put forth their best food, and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way. Our meal at Savannah Red last year was exceptionally disappointing. Hoping I make a better selection this year.

If you’ve had a positive or negative restaurant week experience, please share.

Place to Eat: Blue Taj

Either you absolutely love Indian food or you don’t like it at all. Very few people are so-so on it. The Blue Taj, located in Ballantyne Village behind the Terrace Cafe, is hands down my favorite place to eat Indian food.  It’s a little more upscale and pricier than your typical Indian restaurant, but it is in Ballantyne after all. The chic, modern decor makes it the perfect spot for a date night. There are four different dining areas including a covered patio that is enclosed for use in colder months.

Masala-Chili Cauliflower Florets

Contrary to many Indian restaurants, Blue Taj has a full bar and even a temperature controlled wine cellar.

But of course at an Indian restaurant, it’s really all about the food. And everything on the menu at Blue Taj is a delicious symphony of flavors. For a starter, the Masala-Chili Cauliflower Florets ($5) are a must try. If I had one last meal on earth, I think I would choose this dish. Even my kids yum it up and on no other occasion have I been able to get them to eat cauliflower.

Of course, one must always order Na’an. It’s perfect for mopping up the flavorful sauces.  There are many vegetarian options on the menu as well as seafood, chicken, beef, lamb, and goat dishes. All entrees are served with deliciously aromatic Basmati rice.

Chicken Methi Korma

Some of our favorites from the menu are the Lamb Vind’ Alho ($17), the Chicken Methi Korma ($15) chicken breast simmered in cashew cream sauce with cardamom, Iris essence, and Fenugreek, and the Lamb Saagwala ($17) tender lamb morsels cooked with cream spinach and spices. You get to choose the spice level from 1 to 5, and watch out… 5 is very, very spicy!

Lamb Saagwala

Blue Taj gets fairly crowded on weekends, but they do take reservations. The Sunday lunch buffet is a good option for trying foods you might not otherwise try.

Places to Eat: Flying Biscuit Cafe

The menu at Flying Biscuit Cafe is so chock full of mouth-watering foods, it’s hard to know what to order. Originally started as a single restaurant in Atlanta, Ga in 1993, Flying Biscuit Cafes can now be found across Georgia, in 3 locations in North Carolina (2 of them in Charlotte), and 1 in Florida. There is also a Flying Biscuit Cafe Cookbook so you can attempt some of your favorites at home.

The two Charlotte locations are in Stonecrest Shopping Center (7930 Rea Rd) and Park Rd Shopping Center (4241 Park Rd). The Stonecrest location, near Nothing But Noodles and Starbucks, is a popular spot for breakfast and in addition to a fairly large indoor dining area, there is a wonderful outdoor eating area shaded by large trees and umbrellas at the tables. This patio area is set apart from the parking lot by a stone wall topped with flowers and is a relaxing place to enjoy a meal.

Popular menu items include Flying Green Tomatoes dredged in seasoned cornmeal, topped with jalapeno relish and goat cheese and the Coca Cola BBQ Glazed Salmon with oven-roasted rosemary potatoes, red onion, and feta cheese. But the real draw is the breakfast served all day. The biscuits are sprinkled with a little sugar and served with homemade apple butter. They can be a little dry, but the crisp sugar coating more than makes up for it. They also have magnificent creamy grits and lots of yummy egg scrambles like the one pictured above.

In addition to the standard menu items, Flying Biscuit Cafe also has daily specials like the cinnamon roll pancakes pictured above. One downside to eating breakfast at Flying Biscuit is you won’t be able to order any pork fat to accompany your eggs. They only serve turkey sausage and turkey bacon.
