Grand Opening at TCBY this Saturday

TCBY has already become a part of the Baxter community with their soft opening last weekend, but this weekend they will make it official with a Grand Opening Day on April 13. And it’s not a second too early. With scorching temperatures arriving in Fort Mill this week, a cup of frozen yogurt is a good way to beat the heat.

To celebrate their Grand Opening, TCBY will be giving away free cups of yogurt all day Saturday. Store hours are 11am-11pm. You’ll want to be early because the first 100 customers get gift cards with a value between $1 and $20.

TCBY is located on Market St in Baxter Village next to Cloud 9 Martini Bar, in the space that was formerly Sayago’s. Another new business, Akahana Asian Bistro, will be opening soon just next door.

TCBY serves a variety of frozen yogurts including nonfat, no sugar added, and non-dairy options. This is the second yogurt store to open in Fort Mill in the last month with sweetFrog opening a few weeks ago across from Lowes.

Be sure to Like the Baxter TCBY on Facebook so you’ll know about future promotions.

sweetFrog Frozen Yogurt Store Opens in Fort Mill

sweetFrog fort millToday was opening day for the much anticipated sweetFrog yogurt store in Fort Mill. There is a nearby location in Rock Hill near the Rock Hill Galleria which opened several months ago. The Fort Mill store is located in the strip mall across from Lowes Home Improvement. Other businesses in the strip mall include Charanda’s, Baxter Bunch Playhouse, and A Child’s World Children’s Consignment.

I’d say the frozen yogurt market is starting to get a little crowded and with a TCBY scheduled to open just across the street in Baxter, it will be interesting to see what happens in Fort Mill’s battle of the yogurt franchises.

sweetFrog specializes in premium self-serve frozen yogurt and it is a relatively young company, started in Richmond, VA in 2009. The company has experienced tremendous growth and now has over 200 stores. The ‘Frog’ in sweetFrog stands for ‘Fully Rely on God’.

sweetFrog fort millThe inside of the Fort Mill store looks wonderful with cheerful pastel colors. It was definitely designed to appeal to families with young children. The store Mascots, Scoop and Cookie, are adorable and help create a playful vibe.

The Fort Mill sweetFrog has 14 flavors of frozen yogurt to choose from including Country Vanilla, Cookies n Cream, Cake Batter, Coconut, NY Cheesecake, Georgia Peach, and Peanut Butter. There are low-fat, non-fat, and low-sugar options. I tried 4 different flavors and the coconut was my fav! Smells and tastes like summer to me.

If you think that 14 flavors of yogurt is a lot, wait until you get to the toppings bar. They have toppings galore! Fresh fruit, all kinds of candy, nuts, whipped cream. You name it, they probably have it. I think I ended up with more toppings than yogurt in my cup.

They also have these little things called poppers in 2 flavors and I’m completely intrigued with these things. In fact, it’s all I can do right now not to go back and get a cup full of them. They look like little miniature, glistening paint balls and when you bite into them, they feel  really crisp and squirt out a super sweet and yummy liquid. I’ve got to have some more of them.

The yogurt is priced by the pound. My daughter and I each had a reasonable (that means we restrained ourselves somewhat) portion for under $7 total. Be sure to Like sweetFrog’s Facebook Page. They have been doing frequent giveaways of both gift cards and merchandise.

Baxter Restaurants: Beef O’Bradys

Beef O’Bradys is a happening bar/restaurant on Market St in Baxter. The menu consists of typical bar food: wings, burgers, nachos, wraps, and salads.  The Cheesy Bacon Pub Chips are my favorite thing on the menu. I don’t like to share them.

Unfortunately, you won’t find great food at Beef O’Bradys, just serviceable. It is the location and reasonable prices that keep this Baxter restaurant very busy. On the weekends, they’ll often have live music outside. If the weather is nice, the outdoor eating area is the perfect place to people watch.

Places to Eat: McHale’s

Hungry for some good bar food and a nice cold beer? Check out McHales’s Iris Pub with 2 area locations in Fort Mill and Rock Hill. The Fort Mill Restaurant is on Gold Hill Rd as you drive into Tega Cay. The inside is dark, but inviting with plenty of seating. Outside there is an expansive deck that overlooks the driving range next door. During the warmer months there is a Tiki Bar open. There’s lots to do while you wait for your food or down a couple of beers- pool, horseshoes, and cornhole.

McHale’s has over 100 selections of beer and they frequently change their beer offerings. Live music on the weekends.

Patty Melt

Menu consists of Irish pub food including Bangers and Mash, Shepherd’s Pie, and Fish & Chips, plus typical Bar Food. The Irish Spring Rolls with corned beef, swiss cheese, and sauerkraut are delicious and the Burgers and Fries are pretty good too.

The Rock Hill location on Main St has more of the feel of an Irish Pub. This location has a second floor that can be used for private parties.

Official Grand Opening of Big Apple Bagels

Have you tried the new (and only) bagel store that recently opened in Tega Cay? If not, you won’t want to miss the official grand opening of Big Apple Bagels Friday November 9th and Saturday November 10th. Their Grand Opening Promotion sounds like a pretty good deal- Buy 1 Bagel, Get 5 Bagels Free. I like that ratio!

The first 25 customers each day will receive a free Big Apple Bagels T-shirt. While you’re there be sure to enter their Sweepstakes for a chance to win great prizes. How does free food for a year sound? Bring your kids too because Bagelman, the Big Apple Bagels’ Official Mascot will be present.

Big Apple Bagels Tega Cay is locally owned and operated by Debra Pope and Lisa Oberlin, both former CMS teachers. Both Pope and Oberlin recognized the need for a place to purchase bagels in the Fort Mill area.

In addition to serving 15 varieties of bagels made fresh daily, they also have cream cheese made from scratch, gourmet muffins, breakfast sandwiches, deli sandwiches, salads, specialty coffee, and smoothies. Breakfast and lunch menus are available all day. Catering is also available.

Big Apple Bagels is located in Stonecrest Shopping center in front of Walmart and just down from Carlos Cafe. Store hours are Monday-Friday 6am-4pm and Saturday and Sunday 7am-3pm.

New Fort Mill Restaurant: Local Dish

With a menu full of southern specialties, Local Dish is serving up some local flavor in downtown Fort Mill. The new restaurant on Main St, owned by John Colwell, opened last month to great fanfare. Prior to opening, word about them had spread throughout the community and they had gained 100s of likes for their Facebook Page before they even served a single meal.

The yellow building that Local Dish is calling home still lacks a sign, except for a barely noticeable easel in the window. But still, lunch and dinner crowds have been good most days of the week.

The interior space has been drastically changed since the days of the Gametime Grill. Gone are the booths, replaced with tables covered in burlap and topped with glass and surrounded by chairs painted bright green. The walls are neutral with white beadboard extending halfway up. Strung across them are beautiful local farm photographs attached to twine with clothespins.

Don’t miss the map of the United States made out of old license plates that’s hung on the wall in the hallway leading towards the back door. I smile every time I see it.

Chef Neil Bratton , formerly of The Fishmarket in Baxter, has created an eclectic collection of southern favorites including a few dishes that are innovative and creative interpretations of everyday foods. Take for example the sweet potato hummus, a local ingredient served in an unexpected way. Or the braised pork belly, a food that is making a debut on more and more menus throughout the area. Served with grilled corn and poblano aioli for $7, it might be my favorite thing on the menu. Having a high fat content, pork belly virtually melts in your mouth.

Braised Pork Belly

Other appetizer choices include deviled eggs, pimento cheese fondue, and Fried Green Tomatoes with pecan smoked bacon and Hollandaise Sauce ($7).

Among the entrée standouts are Meatloaf wrapped in bacon and served with mashed potatoes and peas and the very popular Shrimp and Grits served on SC cheddar grits ($16.50). The Local Dish meatloaf is comfort food at its best and I can’t quite put my finger on what all of the seasonings are, but it sure does taste good. Salmon and scallops are also menu choices

Other options on the menu are Chicken and Waffles with bourbon syrup ($13), Chicken Pot Pie flavorfully seasoned in a parmesan sauce and topped with puff pastry, and the PLT-braised pork belly, bibb lettuce, fried green tomato, and garlic aioli (my second favorite thing on the menu).

Local Dish aims to give the local economy as much support as they can and foods are sourced locally when possible. Try a bottle of Ginger Gold Hard Cider, produced by Windy Hill Orchard in York, SC, as a light, refreshing accompaniment to your meal
