There is a common misperception that country clubs own golf courses. This is not the case at Charwood Golf Club, among Columbia’s few family-owned golf courses. Every golfer who has had the privilege of playing at Charwood will attest to how comfortable they felt.

Coldstream Golf Club

2121 Lake Murray Blvd, Columbia, SC 29063

Coldstream Golf Club opened in 1975 – narrow fairways throughout and small greens. Miss the green and you’ll be in trouble – roll in the rough or bounce almost anywhere. Bermuda grass covers the fairways and greens.

Cooper’s Creek

700 Wagner Hwy, Leesville, South Carolina 29070

Cooper’s Creek offers tremendous variety in a pleasant country atmosphere. Some fairways are wide – while others are narrow. The greens differ in size, shape, and undulation. One of the rather difficult holes, # 3, is a 177-yard par 3 that has a nasty bunker right in front of the small green – rather unreceptive. Cooper’s Creek is a thinking golfer’s course. Don’t forget to bring your brain.

Crickentree Country Club

1084 Langford Rd, Blythewood, South Carolina 29016

This Ken Killian designed wonder is one of the most beautiful courses in the Columbia area. Its stunning topography of rolling hills is reminiscent of a mountain course. Meandering streams and towering hardwoods accentuate the beauty that brings our “hard-core” golfers back at every opportunity.

One of the surprising aspects of this course is the many hills that roll in and out of the haven of thick, shady hardwoods and tall pines. It is a character all it’s own.

The trek up and down the hilly cart paths is thrilling in itself. But it is more than 50 bunkers, meticulously pampered greens, and the shimmering 17-acre lake that makes Crickentree the superlative challenge.

Golden Hills Golf and Country Club

100 Scotland Dr, Lexington, SC 29072

A membership at a posh country club is a must if golf is ingrained in your DNA and routine. However, it is not an option if you are only in town for the weekend, or if the membership fee is prohibitively expensive.

Fortunately, non-members are welcome at Golden Hills Golf and Country Club. If you’re in Columbia, South Carolina, for a golfing weekend, you can purchase a day pass. The pass provides you with an excellent pro-tier golf experience while also allowing you to play on one of Columbia’s most beautiful golf courses.

Indian River Golf Course

200 Indian River Dr, West Columbia, SC 29170

Water is a main attraction at Indian River Golf Course, as a 52-acre lake and tricky Congaree Creek add elements of suspense to the 6,507-yard design. Indian Creek, designed by Lynn Young, was opened in 1992 and fashions itself as a links-style track, albeit one that winds through wetlands and has elevation changes of more than 200 feet.

If that’s not enough to deal with, Indian River’s greens are notorious among locals for their size and undulation. This is a place where greens in regulation can be a meaningless statistic, as double-breaking putts of 60 feet or more are not uncommon. -Golf Magazine

Mount Vintage Plantation

375 Mt Vintage Plantation Dr, North Augusta, SC 29860

Mother Nature gave Mount Vintage Plantation an absolutely perfect setting for a golf course. Architect Tom Jackson recognized that from the outset, so he laid out 18 holes that fit perfectly into the mold this fascinating topography presented. The result is an inspired, championship layout that delivers the rare combination of being scenic, challenging, diverse, and yet fun to play for all levels of golfers.

The course offers five sets of tees, wide corridors, hybrid Bermuda roughs and fairways, Crenshaw bentgrass greens, and concrete cart paths. It has the most advanced irrigation system, hand-cut stacked stone bridges, retaining walls and steps, heavy tree cover, four lakes, three streams, and 83 well-placed bunkers. They all combine to make this one of America’s great golf courses. But most unusual is that every single hole is a wonderland of golf risk and reward, regardless of which tee you choose. There is not an ordinary golf hole in the entire layout.
